With our lives increasingly online and technology advancing at an ever faster pace, many of us find our focus and attention have been collateral damage. Digital distractions and interruptions are playing havoc with our ability to stay on task and feel balanced. But there is hope. Dr. Gloria Mark, Chancellor’s Professor Emerita of Informatics at the University of California, Irvine, and author of the groundbreaking book Attention Span will discuss her decades of research on how digital media impacts our attention at home, at work and at play, and offer ways to make peace with our devices and regain our focus and well-being.

About our speaker

 

Dr. Gloria Mark, Chancellor’s Professor of Informatics at the University of California, Irvine, is an expert in the field of human-computer interaction. Her research concerns understanding the impact of digital media on people's lives, and she is best known for her work in studying people's attention behavior while using their computers and phones in real world environments.  

Dr. Mark has published numerous scientific papers in top journals and received multiple awards and a National Science Foundation Career grant, and was inducted into the ACM CHI Academy. She’s presented at SXSW and the Aspen Ideas Festival and her work has appeared in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, NPR, The Atlantic and BBC. She has also been a visiting senior researcher at Microsoft Research since 2012.  She is the author of Attention Span, published in 2023.
